ALPAHBET

Fake it till you make it
Pro-bono for first briefs
weigh up exposure vs money
Who knows of you is important - internships!!
DUKE STUDIOS
not just about looking nice, needs a consideration of how it speaks - personality
small details - icons can be used for everything within design
= bespoke elements = one element that presents the whole idea that can be used throughout designs
= graphic that forms the backbone of the designs
= flexibility with the assets and icons and graphic = build the brand
don't skimp on the photos side of designs

tiny details make the difference - re wording phrases to be more interesting
- spend time on the idea
- if you do this there is less time spent on playing with pixels

IT'S THE IDEA THAT'S HARD

TOP DESIGN INDUSTRY TIPS
- Have a USP = Unique Selling Point = eg. for millennials = who are you, what do you stand for = don't spread yourself too thin = focussed

- Think of yourself as a representative of the brand = if people know you they know your brand

- Never do work for free!! Start charging the amount for what your work is worth = start high and it can be brought down

- Only do it cheap if there's something in it for you = creatively rewarding (exposure) or financially rewarding. If it's neither don't do it.

- Reach out and show initiative! Email people! Company/client to brand, agency to work.

- Get in with the local community. Get yourself out there = behance = linked in = internships = online portfolio = social media

- Don't take yourself too seriously.

- Not graphic design student = graphic designer! = more work and more professional

- After graduating, do self-initiated creative work to keep you happy and sane

- Make work that is exciting now because now is the time to experiment!! BE BOLD

- Safe one, more risky, and wild card = three different ways for the client to take

- Reach out to other creatives when you can't do it well

- Give yourselves 6 months to try out the studio before registering to pay wages

WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN APPLICANTS
- Concepts = idea not just pretty

- 70% idea 30% design = get ideas down on paper first

- Big Ideas and relevant application = how far can the brand be applied? social media, posters, newsletter etc. Don't do it for the sake of application (concept applied properly).

- Work with context

- Take risks, ideas cant be taught.

- Be likeable = don't go to internships if you don't feel you fit in
